GED Official Practice Test (OPT) Information
In an effort to help individuals be better prepared to pass the GED, the Kansas State Department of Education now requires that all individuals pass the GED Official Practice Test (OPT) before taking the actual GED. This testing service is located at Schweiter Center. Payment for testing may be done at either the Schweiter Center or the Main Campus at 301 S. Grove.
- The OPT is structured just like the GED test and consists of five tests. Tests are offered in approximately two-hour blocks and by appointment only:

- Individuals must preregister and pay the $25 charge at Schweiter Center prior to making an appointment for testing.
- A Kansas driver’s license, Kansas ID, military ID or passport is required at the time of registration.
- Individuals must arrive and check in with a photo ID — (Kansas driver’s license, Kansas ID, military ID or passport) 30 minutes before testing begins. Individuals will be checked into the examination room 15 minutes before the scheduled starting time of the test. Individuals will not be allowed to test if they are not present at this time.
- All individuals are required to remain seated until all testing in a particular test block is completed.
- All five sections must be completed in three testing sessions within a six month period.
- Scores older than six months are invalid and will be discarded.
- Individuals must pass all five sections of the OPT with a minimum score of 500 on each test to qualify for the actual GED.
GED Test Information
GED testing consists of a battery of five tests:

- If it is an individual’s first test, or if it has been three months since an individual last tested, he/she must attend a GED preregistration and orientation session and pay for the tests at Schweiter Center prior to making an appointment for testing.
- Individuals must preregister and pay the $68 charge at Schweiter Center prior to making an appointment for testing. This charge for the battery of five GED tests must be paid in full at preregistration. There is a charge of $68 for re-testing. Individuals who do not re-test for a period of 90 days, or who transfer from another center, will have to pay an additional $68 charge. Individuals have 90 days to complete all five GED tests. Individuals whose 90-day period has expired without them completing all five tests must start over.
- Individuals have one year from the date of their first GED test to improve scores. After one year, they must start over in all five areas if they do not pass.
- The state of Kansas requires a minimum standard score of 420 on each test to pass; however, a 2,250-point total is required for the five tests, which calculates to an average score of 450.
- Test results will be available to pick up for to each examinee after all five parts of the test battery are completed. GED scores cannot be reported over the telephone.
- All individuals are required to pass an Official GED Practice Test (OPT) administered through a state-approved adult education program or GED Testing Center. Individuals may not re-test unless they have successfully completed a course of study to improve their scores and taken the OPT again. GED OPT test scores are valid for six months.
- The minimum age for taking the GED test is 18 years. Individual who are 16- or 17-years of age must present a Disclaimer from Compulsory School Attendance form when he/she registers for the test. A parent or guardian signature is required on the registration and verification forms.
- A Kansas driver’s license, Kansas ID, military ID or passport is required at the time of enrollment.
- Individuals must arrive and check in with a photo ID (Kansas driver’s license, Kansas ID, military ID or passport) 30 minutes before testing begins — this is required for admittance to each testing session. Individuals will be checked into the examination room 10 minutes before the scheduled starting time of the test. Individuals will not be allowed to test if they are not present at this time.
- All individuals are required to remain seated until all testing in a particular test block is completed. Any disruptive behavior during a test will result in immediate dismissal from the testing room. Scores for that test will be voided, and re-testing and additional payment will be required.
- Individuals may not use their own supplies. Pens, pencils and scratch paper will be furnished.
- All purses, coats and other materials will be placed on a coat rack in the test room before testing begins. Cell phones, pagers and electronic devices are not allowed in the building. Individuals are responsible for their belonging in the test room.

Spanish GED Test Changes
Nationally, Spanish GED tests changed January 1, 2004. Spanish GED scores prior to this date, whether incomplete or in need of improvement, became invalid after January 1, 2004.
Requesting Duplicate Diplomas, Transcripts or Verifications
There is a $10 fee for duplicate diplomas and/or transcripts, which come from the Kansas Board of Regents/GED, Topeka, Kansas, 1.785.296.3191 only.
